One of Little Rock’s largest outdoor events, the 16th Annual Little Rock Marathon pounds the pavement March 3-4. Known for its fun themes, this year’s “What’s Your Quest” medieval spin is sure to please. More than 14,000 athletes lace up their shoes — and maybe even some Renaissance cloaks and tunics — to make the trek up, down and all around the capital city. Known as a race for every pace, you’ll find a 26.2-mile marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K Fun Run/Walk, the challenge (two races), and a Kids Marathon Final Mile. In fact, the annual event has been recognized as a Runner’s World “Bucket List: 10 Great Marathons for First-Timers.”
The marathon is also considered a spectator sport as thousands of food and drink vendors, live entertainers, lookers-on and volunteers line the streets to cheer on their athletes and celebrate their accomplishments. At the end of the line is the piece de resistance — the larger than life finisher’s medal. It is the perfect showpiece for a job well done. Each year, the blinged-out medals get a little bit bigger, with the 2018 model coming in at 8.5 inches tall and 2.5 pounds. In 2004, Runner’s World proclaimed it the world’s largest . Over the years, these prized possessions have been dubbed some of the biggest in the marathon community, and some industry leaders have linked the big medal trend with Little Rock’s race.
