When summer rolls around Little Rock, the list of things to do is almost endless! Whether you’re looking for something indoors or outdoors, an adventure for adults or an outing for the whole family, here are some of our favorite ways to have summer fun in Little Rock!
- Hit the Trails
Summer is one of the best times of the year to take advantage of the extensive biking and hiking trails around Little Rock. From the 17-mile loop of the Arkansas River Trail to the breakneck dips and dives of the mountain biking trails at Pinnacle Mountain Sate Park, a bike is one of the best ways to have fun in Little Rock.
Biking not your thing? Don’t worry – there are plenty of hiking trails that offer some of the best views in the state! Pinnacle Mountain State Park offers a bird’s-eye view of downtown Little Rock, and for the little ones, the Kingfisher Trail gives families the chance to wander the banks of the Little Maumelle River.
- Experience History
Just because school is out doesn’t mean you have to stop learning! Little Rock is full of museums – each with fun and exciting exhibits all summer long. The whole family can get in on the fun at the Museum of Discovery. With exhibits that explore everything from physics to the human body, and an exciting simulation of what it’s like to experience a tornado, you’ll leave with a new outlook on the world around you.
At the Historic Arkansas Museum, guests can step back in time to the 1800’s with the museum’s collection of antebellum buildings on Little Rock’s original block. Living history actors bring the era to life as you explore what Little Rock was like when Arkansas first became a state. Other exhibits include displays of cultural artifacts from indigenous Native American tribes and a collection of Bowie knives and bladesmithing.
- Cool Down with a Sweet Treat
Any local can tell you just how hot Little Rock gets in the summer. They can also say that one of the best ways to beat the heat is by visiting any number of the shops around town that sell ice cream and other sweet treats. Loblolly Creamery is owned by Little Rock’s homegrown ice cream maker and has a scoop shop in the heart of the SoMa (South Main) neighborhood where visitors can eat their way through more than twenty flavors!
Kilwins, located in the River Market district, specializes in ice cream and fudge, meaning there’s something on the menu for everyone, and Le Pops in the Heights neighborhood makes gourmet popsicles in a full spectrum of out-of-this-world flavors!
- Get Wild
Looking for something a little wild this summer? It’s hard to get wilder than a visit to the Little Rock Zoo, the only accredited zoo in Arkansas. Daily animal feedings and regular zoo keeper chats make a visit to the zoo a highlight of any summer in Little Rock!
You can also get to know some animals on a smaller scale by visiting the Urban Farm at Heifer International. This three-acre working farm is located on the campus of Heifer International’s headquarters in Little Rock’s East Village neighborhood. There you can meet llamas, goats, pigs and chickens as well as walk through the farm’s gardens and tour the barn.
- Movies in the Park
Each Wednesday night at sunset, the First Security Amphitheater in Riverfront Park turns into one of the largest movie theatres in town. A different family-friendly movie is shown each week through July 31. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and dogs, food and drinks are welcome (no glass, please)!
